The Earl Of Wessex Makes First Visit to South Carolina

The Earl of Wessex will be in Greenville, South Carolina next week to bestow The Duke of Edinburgh's Award Young Americans’ Challenge on seventy-eight Miss South Carolina contestants. It is the first all-female organization in the United States to receive the honour. Seventy females will be given the Bronze Award whilst the other eight will receive the Silver Award. The prince earned his Gold Award in 1986.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award focusses on community service, skills, environmental journeys, physical recreation and residential projects.

Prince Edward is a trustee of The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and the International Foundation. He is the chair of the International Council.

The earl’s father The Duke of Edinburgh founded the programme in 1956. The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award received a Royal Charter in 2006 on its 50th anniversary.
