LATEST NEWS: Madrid Loses Bid to Rio De Janeiro for 2016 Olympic Games

The International Olympic Committee has just chosen Rio de Janeiro, Brazil to host the 2016 Summer Olympics and Paralympics Games. Brazil will be the first South American country to host an Olympic Games. The contingents of Brazil and Spain gave impassioned speeches and spectacular presentations of their respective countries during the 121st IOC Session and XIII Olympic Congress in Copenhagen. Madrid had the backing of the Spanish king whilst Rio de Janeiro had Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Making his speech in the Bella Center, King Juan Carlos emphasized the importance of tradition along with the theme of keeping the human touch to the Olympic proceedings.

Spain last held a Summer Olympics Games in 1992. The city was Barcelona.

BREAKING NEWS: King Juan Carlos in Copenhagen for Olympic Games Bid

King Juan Carlos I of Spain participated in the recent bid for Madrid to host the 2016 Summer Olympic Games a few moments ago. The International Olympic Committee is in Copenhagen to decide the fate of four cities after hearing their formal presentations of commitment and spirit to the Olympic Games ideal. After a short coffee break, the members of the IOC will cast their vote and officially name the host city of the 2016 Summer Olympic and Paralympics Games.

The final four candidate cities for the 2016 Summer Olympics and Paralympics are Madrid, Rio de Janeiro, Tokyo and Chicago.

Prince Kardam Remains in Hospital

Prince Kardam is still recovering from his critical injuries he sustained from an automobile accident on August 15th. He remains at the Hospital Universitario 12 de Octubre in Madrid. According to the Spanish media, he was never released to recuperate at home.

Princess Miriam Recovers from Devastating Automobile Wreck

Princess Miriam was released from Hospital Universitario La Paz in Madrid this week after treatment for moderate injuries which she received in an automobile accident on August 15th. Her husband, Prince Kardam, remains in critical condition at the Hospital Universitario 12 de Octubre in Madrid. He sustained devastating injuries to his head and hands. He was the driver of the vehicle when the incident occurred.

Prince Kardam Suffers Traumatic Injuries from Automobile Wreck

Prince Kardam, eldest son of King Simeon II, suffered traumatic injuries when his Jaguar careened off the road and smashed into a tree yesterday afternoon. The vehicle upon impact with the tree overturned landing on its roof. The accident happened on the N-1 expressway outside of Madrid.

His wife, Princess Miriam, was in the vehicle when the accident occurred and sustained moderate injuries including a broken elbow and bruises. She is being treated at Hospital Universitario La Paz in Madrid. Prince Kardam was not as fortunate. His injuries were far more devastating. He was taken to the Hospital Universitario 12 de Octubre in Madrid for treatment of head and hand injuries. He remains in critical condition.

King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofía Open FITUR Expo

The 28th edition of the Feria Internacional de Turismo (FITUR) Expo in Madrid was officially opened by King Juan and Queen Sofía of Spain yesterday. In his opening remarks, the king welcomed some first time participants among the 170 countries represented at the trade fair: Madagascar, São Tomé and Príncipe, Greenland and Bhutan. Amidst the praise and recognition, Juan Carlos accentuated the tourism industry’s efficacy to protect and promote historic patrimony and culture.

Queen Noor’s Quest To Controvert Stereotypes

Queen Noor of Jordan attended the First Forum in Madrid presented by the Alliance of Civilizations on Tuesday. Furthermore, she launched the Alliance of Civilizations Media Fund that would oppugn stereotypes which were “reinforced by popular culture and the media.” The fund’s objective would be to “support the production and distribution of films that entertain as well as enlighten” and “that will enhance the connections that already exist between different societies, but are seldom noted on screen and in popular culture.” The queen expostulated that stereotypes “can set the emotional and political stage for policies that result in chronic misunderstanding.”
